Why Am I Hearing A Loud Knock From My Suspension?
Have you driven over a bump or into a pothole and heard a large bang from your suspension and wondered what the
heck was happening? It can be a frightening sound that makes you think something is about to break. So what is
behind these loud bangs and should you be concerned?
Yes, this is something to be concerned with because left untouched, it can lead to some major damage, and repair
bills. The primary culprit behind the knocks and bangs is your suspension mounts. There is a rubber bushing there
and it has given way over the course of time. The result is that noise you are hearing as it hits the strut tower
in your suspension.
Ignoring the sound will not make the problem go away. Just the opposite will happen, it will get worse. We've
seen people who have ignored this issue come into the repair shop with a lot of additional damage to their
suspension parts because they blew off the problem.
The good news to all of this is that it is a fairly easy fix at the shop. They can raise your car or truck up
and replace the bushing, or bushings on both sides. At the same time, if your vehicle is older and you've never
changed the shocks or struts, this may be a good time to get them replaced as well. Yes, it will cost a few hundred
dollars, but you'll save both money and aggravation over the long run by going ahead and getting it done now.
