Is Ozone That Damaging To My Tires?
No matter the brand or style of tires you have on your car or truck, and regardless of their cost, there is
something attacking the life of them on a daily basis. That something is ozone. Most tire owners never pay it much
attention, but it does millions of dollars in destruction each year.
So how does ozone destroy the sidewalls of your tires over time? As you drive your vehicle down the highway,
your tires flex. The protective waxes that are designed inside the tire actually move to the surface of the tire so
that they build a wall so to speak between the tire polymers, and the ozone in the air.
When your car or truck are parked, the protective waxes stay down inside the tire. This provides no help to the
ozone, and UV rays if your vehicle is parked outside. The result is a tire that begins to slowly deteriorate. Think
of it like you would heart disease, which is known as the silent killer. You don't see it or notice it is really
happening until it is too late.
Once the ozone gets through the surface and into the tire polymer, the tire begins to dry out and cracks start
to form. By this time you will need to replace the tires. Is there any way of protecting the tires from the ozone?
The best tip if you plan on storing the vehicle, or boat trailer, etc., is to remove the tires and store them in
your garage and out of the sun.
The other solution is to use specially formulated products that are designed to protect the tires from ozone and
UV rays. But one thing to keep in mind here is that not all products are alike. Some can actually do more harm than
good. So be sure to thoroughly read up on the product and the ingredients before using it. We have included some
helpful products on our site that are both safe and effective to use that you might want to check out.
